Carole L. Brown passed into eternity on Monday, July 2, 2017 while surrounded by loved ones at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colorado after a valiant four-year battle with ovarian cancer.



Carole was born on July 18, 1945 in Glenwood Springs to Warren A. and Margaret A. Nordhausen. She and her brother, Lloyd, grew up in the Public Service company house in Glenwood Canyon at the Shoshone Power Plant, along with the Kelley family. Carole graduated from Glenwood Springs High School in 1963. She earned her associate degree and became an R.N. after attending Presbyterian Nursing School in Denver, Colorado in 1966.



Carole married Brinkley B. Brown, III on June 18, 1966, and they had one daughter, Dendy Marie (Brown) Heisel, born on August 5, 1971. Carole fulfilled many roles throughout her life including loving wife, mother, grandmother, step-mother, friend, ranch hand, camp cook, geriatric nurse, home health nurse, Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader, and grassroots political volunteer and leader. Carole was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Glenwood Springs, Order of the Eastern Star and the PEO Sisterhood.



Carole was recently inducted into the Colorado Republican State Hall of Fame in honor of her years of service, including various campaigns, committees, and leadership positions as County Chairman, Colorado Federation of Republican Women President and National Federation of Republican Women Board Member.



As a lifelong resident of Glenwood, Carole was a go-to resource and keeper of history who seemed to know everyone and everything about our community. In an outpouring of love and remembrance on social media, she has been referred in such terms as “a Grande Dame of Glenwood,” “a pillar of our community,” and “one of the First Ladies of Glenwood.” Many looked to her as an example and inspiration, as she continued to live life to the fullest through two battles with cancer in the past decade. Her influence and vibrant presence in our town will be truly missed.



She took a genuine interest in others, and mentored and guided many. Carole was always there to offer wise counsel and help anyone with a problem or a need. With her nurturing spirit, Carole was like a second mom to so many.



Carole loved to cook, and you knew you were special if you received one of her homemade birthday cakes. This was one of the many ways she showed her love and care for those around her over the years.



Her favorite role in later life was as devoted grandmother to her precious grandsons, Gus and Andy. As a regular volunteer in their classrooms, she became a beloved second grandmother to many of their classmates who, upon seeing her bright smile coming down the hall, would enthusiastically greet her as “Mema,” too!

Carole is survived by her daughter Dendy (Fred) Heisel, step-daughter Shannon (Danny) Muse, step-son Russ (Sandi) Brown, grandsons Gus and Andy Heisel, step-grandsons Jesse Gilmer, Trevor Brown, and Hunter Brown, brother Lloyd (Barbara) Nordhausen, nephew Craig Nordhausen, niece Amy (Nordhausen) Kimball, sister-in-law Shannon Brown, niece Darcy Hagberry, nephews Matt and Beau Hagberry, and nephew Bart Dunfee. Carole was predeceased by her husband Brinkley B. Brown III (November 5, 2007).



Carole lived a life full of love and energy. Her passing has left a hole in the hearts of her family, but they are consoled and blessed by her faith in Jesus as her Lord and Savior and the firm hope of life everlasting. Her love of God, family, community, and country will be her lasting legacy.



Funeral services will be held at Mountain View Church in Glenwood Springs on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception at the church and graveside service at the Highland Cemetery in New Castle. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northwestern Colorado Youth for Christ and The Calaway and Young Cancer Center.
