Obituary for Gertrude M Ostermaier
Trudy Ostermaier passed away peacefully in the early morning on Aug. 28 with her son and her grandson by her side. She was lovingly and wonderfully cared for by Hospice of the Valley and the Heritage Nursing Home in Carbondale where she had been for just over a year.
Trudy was born in Germany in 1911. She left there as a young woman and moved to France. In Paris, she met her future husband, Herman Stormier. They were married in Megeve in 1935 and lived in the French Alps, Herman teaching skiing and Trudy fixing lunches for the skiers in their little cabin on the ski slope. In 1939, they immigrated to the United States.
They arrived in New York City where they worked briefly, but longed for the mountains and skiing. In 1940, they moved to North Conway, New Hampshire and opened a ski lodge called The Oxen Yoke. Herman taught skiing and Trudy was in charge of the kitchen. It was a lively place as skiing was just catching on in the U.S. and this was the center of it. They lived there and raised their son while experiencing many adventures running a ski lodge and caring for innumerable pets for 30 years.
In 1971, the lure of higher mountains and lighter snow drew them westward and they retired to Aspen, built a house on Silver King Drive and shared many years skiing, hiking, camping and building lasting friendships. After Herman’s death, Trudy moved to the convenience and security of assisted living, where she enjoyed even more years, involved with her church, being with friends, playing lots of bridge and being cared for by the dedicated staff at Whitcomb Terrace. Trudy is survived by her son, Dennis, of New Hampshire, her grandson, Dennis and his wife, Leah, and her great-grandson Aidan of New York City.
Contributions in Trudy’s memory may be made to Hospice of the Valley, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 533 F. Main St., Aspen or the Aspen Animal Shelter, 212 AABC, Aspen.
A Funeral Mass and Reception will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Aspen on Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at 11 a.m.
